EnergyVille

EnergyVille is an energy research and innovation center specializing in sustainable energy technologies and intelligent energy systems. Established in 2009 and based in Genk, Belgium, it is a collaboration between KU Leuven, VITO, imec, and UHasselt. EnergyVille develops technologies, knowledge, and practical solutions for the transition toward a sustainable, affordable, reliable, and resilient energy system, working with companies, governments, energy-sector organizations, and other research institutions.

We help EnergyVille hire top engineers with confidence. Ready to start hiring based skills instead of CVs?

Scale

EnergyVille brings together more than 700 researchers from its four partner institutions, combining scientific expertise with dedicated research, testing, and demonstration infrastructure. Its activities are concentrated at Thor Park in Genk and supported by an international network of industrial, public-sector, and research partners. EnergyVille also operates the Open Thor Living Lab, where energy technologies can be tested and demonstrated in real-world buildings, homes, and energy networks before wider deployment.

Product

Rather than developing a conventional product portfolio, EnergyVille develops energy technologies, prototypes, system solutions, models, and testing capabilities that can be transferred into industrial and real-world applications. Its work covers technologies ranging from photovoltaic cells, batteries, power electronic converters, and hydrogen systems to thermal technologies, energy-management solutions, electrical grids, and energy-system models. These capabilities enable companies and public-sector organizations to develop, validate, and integrate technologies across different stages of the energy value chain.

Market Focus

EnergyVille focuses on the technologies and infrastructure required to accelerate the energy transition, with activities spanning renewable energy generation, energy storage, electrification, energy conversion, smart grids, buildings, industrial processes, and energy markets. Its research addresses applications including photovoltaic generation, electric mobility, industrial decarbonization, sustainable fuels and molecules, grid integration, energy-efficient buildings, and flexible energy systems. EnergyVille works across the energy value chain, from materials and components through modules and systems to infrastructure, markets, and policy.

Core Technologies

The company operates across eight interdisciplinary research domains: solar energy, battery storage, power electronics, power-to-molecules, thermal systems, electrical networks, buildings and districts, and energy strategies and markets. Its technical expertise includes photovoltaic materials and devices, battery materials and cell architectures, electrochemistry and hydrogen, wide-bandgap power electronics, energy conversion, thermal systems, grid modelling and control, building physics, energy-system modelling, and energy-market simulation. This combination allows EnergyVille to connect component-level technology development with system integration and real-world validation.

Industry Impact

EnergyVille contributes to the energy transition through research that connects laboratory-scale technology development with industrial deployment and system-level integration. Its projects include next-generation photovoltaic technologies and building- and vehicle-integrated solar systems, advanced battery materials and solid-state battery technologies, power electronics for electric vehicles and future electricity networks, and Power-to-X technologies for hydrogen, synthetic fuels, and chemicals.

Beyond individual technologies, EnergyVille works on how these technologies function together within larger energy systems. Its research includes projects on industrial flexibility and electrification, future transmission infrastructure, smart electricity grids, energy-efficient buildings, and sustainable energy strategies. The Open Thor Living Lab provides an environment where technologies can be developed, tested, demonstrated, and scaled in realistic conditions, helping bridge the gap between research and industrial application.

Partnership with Metheion

EnergyVille partners with Metheion to source highly specialized engineering and R&D profiles across energy technology, advanced materials, electrochemistry, battery technology, hydrogen and electrolysis, photovoltaics, power electronics, energy conversion, and related deep-tech fields.

Metheion specializes in identifying technical talent with a combination of hands-on engineering expertise and scientific depth, particularly for roles where conventional recruitment approaches struggle to identify candidates with the required technical background. Through this partnership, Metheion supports EnergyVille in accessing specialized engineers and researchers who can contribute to technology development, experimental R&D, process development, system integration, testing, and the transition of new energy technologies from research into practical applications.
